Objects and Things between Design and Experience
Design of Interactive Systems (in frameworks like Computer Supported Cooperative Work, Ubiquitous and Mobile Computing, Community Systems, etc.) is a multi-disciplinary, collaborative activity where creativity, on one hand, and user experience, on the other hand, play a major role. We will discuss the concepts of object and thing in relation to the design process as a way to understand its complexity and its peculiarity with respect to its distinctive qualities and to the cooperation among designers and between designers and users. Even if it focuses on design of computer based systems, most of what will be said applies also to design in general. This work is part of a book in preparation by a European team of six persons.
Bio
Prof. Giorgio De Michelis teaches Theoretical Computer Science and Information Systems at the University of Milano – Bicocca, where he has served as Director of the Department of Informatics, Systems and Communications from 2002 to 2007. His research focuses on models of concurrent systems (Petri Nets), and Computer Supported Cooperative Work, community-ware, knowledge management and interaction design, where his group has developed and is developing prototypes of support systems for cooperative processes and knowledge management systems (CHAOS, UTUCS, MILANO, CAMPIELLO, KLEE&CO, MILK, ATELIER).
Giorgio De Michelis has authored four books and more than hundred papers in the areas of his interest.
Giorgio De Michelis is vice-president of Fondazione IRSO, a research institute devoted to the study of socio-technical systems, industrial innovation and gvernment organziation.
